The figures came out this week stating that the world has more than 100,000,000 more people who are now hungry because of the economic downturn. Indeed the food and agriculture organisation of the United Nations states that there are now over 1 billion people in the world who are hungry.
This got me thinking about what difference we could make? And what it means to live with less? The other day i saw this statement on Twitter “A life without sacrifice is an abomination!” and i wondered how many of us in the West live lives of sacrifice? I guess we all sacrifice in one way or another, any sort of relationship is going to mean sacrifice, weather it is that of a friend or family member. But i wonder what it means to live a life of sacrifice that goes beyond the normal realms of life?
I wonder if you have ever heard or actually participated in Fasting? Fasting is a ancient spiritual discipline here is how Wikipedia defines the practice Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Personally i do fast from time to time and find it an incredible way to engage and/or reengage with God. But i wonder if we could take this principal into different spheres of life as well and what that would look like. to fast from extravagance to fast from living so quickly to fast from putting ourselves first? I don’t know the answers, and i don’t know if it would ever make a difference to those in the world who are hungry, i do have a feeling that something would change maybe just in us, but also maybe something more?…… what do you think?
