The issue is Piracy, (now don’t tell me the word ARRRG! Didn’t just flash though your mind!) To think that in this day and age Pirates still exist, was not a concept that ever really crossed my mind, especially not that they “are equipped with speedboats and armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.”
But it seems that this is a real and present situation, and people are loosing their lives, whilst others are making literally millions of pounds in the process.
A good friend of mine who comes from the continent of Africa stated that this problem has been going on for a long while, but of course we do not hear about it in the UK because it does not directly affect us. But he said that the region of Somalia that it is all taking place in is just about completely lawless, which is why this is taking place.
This got me thinking about the people involved, who for some I am sure will not have a choice about whether or not they have to steal to survive. I wonder is it ever right to take from someone else if it feeds your own family?
It also got me thinking about whether or not I am a pirate? Is everything in my life above board? Copyright piracy is a huge pandemic in our western society, the concept that it does not matter if you copy a cd for a friend because its only taking from a multi million pound industry, who will be insured and will have taken into account in the original price that cost of piracy….
But is this any different from the men on the high seas, all they are doing is ripping off million pound businesses, who are insured as well….
The bible states Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it’s God’s order. So live responsibly as a citizen. If you’re irresponsible to the state, then you’re irresponsible with God, and God will hold you responsible.
I think we always need to obey those who are in authority over us, but that does beg the question what would you do if you lived in Germany in 1939? Here is a story of someone who held on to both truths, and even though he lost his life I think in the end he succeeded in doing both….
